Welcome!

Welcome to Plastic Surgery 101. Blogging is a new adventure for me so I'm not sure which direction things are going to go here. What I'd like to do is highlight some of the areas of Plastic Surgery that are confusing to most people & explain/comment on things in a way that's both fun to read & informative.

My name is Dr. Robert Oliver , Jr. & I'm a Plastic Surgeon in Birmingham, Alabama. I was fully trained in both General and Plastic Surgey before focusing my interest in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and breast reconstruction. I've joined my father, Dr. Robert Oliver Sr., in practice in 2005.

Stay tuned for content update!

Dear Dr. Oliver,
I would like your opinion on
fillers for acne scars. I have
had laser procedures done as
well as dermabrasion. I have
had treatments with the CO2
laser and treatments with the
cool touch laser. I have not
noticed significant results with
any of these procedures. What
is your opinion regarding fillers
for improving the skin surface?
I am constantly looking for new
procedures that might have better
results. Please give me your
input on this. Do you ever
use volunteers for experimental
procedures with new products and
procedures? I really want to
try to improve the texture of
my skin as the scars and skin
surface tend to worsen with age.
This has been a lifelong pursuit
of mine in trying to improve my
skin. Thank you in advance for
any information you may share
on this subject.

I've seen some nice results with Sculptura for this. Sculptura is a long-acting filler originally approved for facial lipodystrophy ("fat shrinking")in AIDS patients.

Be aware though, it's MUCH more expensive then other fillers. I'd reccomend trying one of the hyaluronic acid fillers first (Restylene, Hylaform, or Captique)or old-fashioned collagen to see if you get something you're happy with before going for one of the longer acting ones.

Rob,
Are you board certified in plastic surgery?

One thing that the FDA hopes to do is to allow only board certified plastic surgeons to perform any implants.

I think this is an excellent idea.

Hi Rob,

Looking forward to reading your posts in the future.

We are launching a brand new site and magazine here in the UK, called Cosmetic Surgery Answers - any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Best
